"You've achieved success in your field when you don't know whether what you're doing is work or play."
~ Warren Beatty
I believe in transparency. A college education is both expensive and time intensive. Students should know the quality of the instruction purchased by their tuition dollars. Additionally, the more knowledge about courses and instructors, the more informed students are when registering for a course. Fifteen weeks can feel like an eternity when students enroll in a course that is sub-par, uninteresting, or a poor fit.
Transparency also makes me a better teacher by publicly accounting for the academic courses that I teach and challenges me to create and deliver the best courses for my students. I have posted both yearly department evaluations and semester student evaluations. In them you will find the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to my course instruction. I consider my teaching efforts successful as long as the good outweigh both the bad and the ugly, and as long as I am using my evaluations to critically problem solve, adjust, and improve my instruction from semester-to-semester. |
