HDFS 2040: Analytics for the Behavioral Sciences
"Statistics is the grammar of science."
~ Karl Pearson
Spring 2023 Introduction: Link Welcome to the introduction to statistics course! I look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the semester and I hope you will find the course to be a rewarding experience. Many students come into the statistics course with much anxiety. Some students feel that their math skills are not very strong or they have heard that statistics is a very difficult subject or they think they will never encounter statistics again. These feelings are generally untrue. Luckily the hardest, single mathematical computation in introductory statistics is the square-root function. As such, the mathematical skills required for the subject is within everyone's capability. However, understanding the concepts and formulas and knowing when to apply each formula can make statistics seem difficult, but with enough practice, which takes a lot of time and dedication, anyone can do well in a statistics course. One of the great joys of teaching, regardless of the subject matter, is helping students work past their anxieties. In the process, students gain confidence in their abilities and realize their potential in solving real-life problems. Every field in contemporary society values evidence-based solutions to real-life problems; these solutions are based in statistics. |
